The Department of Paediatrics and Family Medicine at the SUM Municipal Hospital in Tychy has been established. It is headed by Professor Paweł Matusik, provincial consultant in paediatrics and, at the same time, head of the Clinical Department of Paediatrics, Child Obesity and Bone Metabolic Diseases at our University.
The establishment of the Chair is another extremely important step to improve the quality of education at SUM and the great return of family medicine to the Faculty of Medical Sciences in Katowice, which was one of the goals of the rector of SUM, Professor Tomasz Szczepański. It is worth mentioning that this is the return of family medicine to the WNM after... 18 years.
- We are very proud that, responding to the educational needs of thousands of our students, we have found such a friendly place at the Tychy City Hospital, which is extremely important to house a Chair that will not only educate, but certainly develop scientific activity, which is one of the University's priorities," said Prof Edward Wylęgała, SUM's Vice-Chancellor for Development and Technology Transfer, during the opening of the Chair.
Classes in family medicine are held in the second, fifth and sixth years. A total of 3,500 hours are planned for 2023/2024. The previous Department of Family Medicine within the structures of the Katowice faculty was abolished in 2005.
- The Tychy hospital is headed by our graduate Dr Marek Krawczyk, MD. We are proving that a city hospital can be academic and at the highest level," said SUM Chancellor Dr n. med. Ireneusz Ryszkiel. - Interestingly, the Department employs two family medicine consultants, because in addition to Professor Matusik, it also has a provincial consultant in family medicine, Dr Ireneusz Szymczyk, MD, PhD.
According to hospital director Dr Krawczyk, the creation of the Chair is an opportunity and an honour for his institution. - In this way, we are becoming an academic hospital, becoming part of the history of the Silesian Medical University, and by educating students in such a key field as family medicine we are fulfilling an extremely important mission,' explained the director. - In the region, we are one of the most important hospitals providing paediatric care.
